Saturday Style: Aug. 6th
The pair you splurged on because they were just what you wanted and now wear summer after summer. That cheap pair you found in a gas station with the perfect shape. Sunglasses are another opportunity in your wardrobe to highlight your style because they can show off your personality.
Personally, I have a pair of perfect color Mykita’s that I’ve been wearing for years, and I recently purchased stand out, vintage style Warby Parker’s I love as well.
First, look for shape. Round or squared frames are going to fit your face differently. And as much as you may love the look of structured, square frames, if they don’t fit your face then they are not going to look right. There may be a way to get that structured look with another shape, though. Ask a professional at your local frame shop if you’re having trouble. Even if you don’t need prescription lenses, in my experience, they are often more than happy to help.
Once you find a general shape you can try out variations from there. And you’ll know you’ve found just the right one when you try them on and they look amazing. This is why that fifteen-dollar pair of sunglasses can actually work. And may be the way to go if you always lose your sunglasses halfway through the season.
What drew me to the Mykita sunglasses I own is their softened structure. They have the essence of a square shape that fits my face well, but with rounded features that go with a more classic sunglass shape.
Next is style. Do you want the chunky look of the wayfarer? This is the typical sunglass look, so try it out if that’s what you’re going for. What about taking it back to the 50’s with the Ray-Ban horn rimmed? Can you carry off the sleek look of an aviator? They would look great with your biker jeans. How about the vintage look of round frames? Do you want a notched bridge?
When I saw Warby Parker’s Bates sunglasses I knew I had to have them. They are heavy on the vintage and are not your typical sunglasses. Which is exactly what I was looking for in style.
The rest is personal flare: clear frames, wood, a stand out color. If you know what you’re looking for beforehand this can help narrow down your search. If not, try them out and see which fits you.
A few years ago, I was looking for my first pair of prescription sunglasses, and I knew I wanted a pair with a great color. I wanted my sunglasses to go with and still stand out from the more polished and buttoned up style I had then.
The Mykitas were just what I wanted. The color is beautiful. The blue-grey definitely fits me, and I wasn’t seeing a lot of it out there in sunglasses at the time.
Over the years I’ve continued to wear them because they’re very versatile. They go with so many looks.
When I wanted another option in my sunglasses, I turned to Warby Parker. I loved the experience I had in buying my glasses. They don’t have a store location in Portland – yet – but being able to try on five pairs at home and mail them back a few days later is amazing.
What I enjoy most about these sunglasses is that they are round, and they fit my face. My eye has always been drawn to rounded frames, but in trying a few on it was immediately obvious that they don’t work for me. I think what makes the bates so great is that bridge. It balances out the roundness and brings a unique style to these sunglasses.
So what about you? Where did you find your favorite pair of sunglasses?
