Saturday Style: June 25th

Saturday Style: June 25th

Do you eagerly wait for the first day that will be above sixty degrees, so you can wear a pair of shorts? Or, are there none to be found in your closet? I’ve never been the biggest fan of shorts, and it seems there are a fair amount of us out there. I know plenty of people who wear pants year round because they don’t feel comfortable in shorts. Shorts are another way of exposing the body, and so many of us – queer or not – have hang-ups around our bodies.

Let’s face it, though. Sometimes it’s really hot out, and pulling on a pair of pants is the last thing you want to do. Shorts can be another way to accessorize your style. When I started to think about them this way, I came around to shorts. So have fun with them.

One way to get more comfortable with this summer staple is to get a pair that fit well. The top of shorts should fall a couple of inches past your belly button. If you have shorter legs, like me, try a pair that falls a few inches above your knees.  Look for shorter shorts because they will elongate your legs. If you find a pair you like but they’re too long, roll up the hem (this is especially good for chinos). Yup, this style is not just for pants. If you’ve been blessed with longer legs you can pull off longer short styles, those that fall all the way at the knee.

Once you find a pair that fit, consider bright colors. Summer is the time to show them off, and this can be a great way to accessorize a simple t-shirt and sneaker. Whimsy is also a part of summer style, so think about shorts with a pattern. You can be subtle or comical with it. You can pull off an athletic look with sports shorts, or even cut off a pair of jeans that still have some wear.

I found a pair of Frank and Oak shorts after checking out an article from A Dapper Chick on spring style. I liked what I saw and had to have my own. Frank and Oak have many short styles on their site, and what I loved about all of them were their clean lines. I wanted something that would stand out a little, so these navy shorts with a simple pattern were exactly what I was looking for. A little formal and a little fun.

So get out there, and find a pair of shorts you can enjoy all the sun, beach trips, and BBQ’s in. Summer is a time to play, and that includes with your style.
